Bucking the Trend – Australia’s First Female Vc Founder on Beating the Odds and Launching a Business in the Middle of the Gfc

About

Dr Michelle Deaker is a true pioneer in the VC industry – she was one of the first female founders of a VC firm in Australia, and built OneVentures whilst navigating the global fallout of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

Her story is fascinating, from being a scientist and achieving her PHD in applied science, to becoming an entrepreneur and launching E Com Industries (www.giftvouchers.com.au) in 1999 - which became the leading prepaid and electronic voucher provider in Australia. Notably, E Com Industries was one of only a handful of Australian companies that successfully navigated the dotcom boom and crash through to a successful outcome for investors.

She then sold E Com industries and became an angel investor, which then led to her forming OneVentures and becoming a leading VC investor in Australia. All whilst raising a family, being a philanthropist and supporting Sydney’s flourishing arts and culture organisations.

This interview will be informative and highly engaging, offering insight into the world of VC and what it takes to find success as a woman. It will be conducted by Carolyn Miller, known for her decade of appearances on ABC program “Gruen”, and current Head of Marketing at OneVentures.
