Digital Land Rights in the Metaverse: A First Nations Perspective

About

The emergence of the Metaverse is rapidly transforming the way we live. As more people begin to engage with the Metaverse, it is essential to consider the impact of this technology on the rights of Indigenous peoples.

This presentation will explore the First Nations perspective on digital land rights in the Metaverse. I will begin by providing a personal story and will set the scene on digital land rights and why these are so important to support Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination in the digital world.

I will then discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with digital land rights in the Metaverse. These include issues related to ownership, control, access to virtual spaces, and the potential for economic development and cultural revitalisation.

The presentation will conclude with a call to action for all stakeholders in the Metaverse ecosystem to engage with Indigenous peoples in a respectful and meaningful way. This includes recognising the importance of Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing in shaping the development of the Metaverse, and supporting initiatives that promote Indigenous digital sovereignty.

The audience will learn about best practices for engaging with Indigenous peoples and supporting the development of a just and equitable digital world for all.
