How Can Surfers Lead a Wave of Change? Taking Off on a Wave of Powerful Advocacy, Innovation and Action

About

Surfers share an intimate relationship with the ocean. It is their playground, escape from the daily grind, and saltwater sanctuary. In a world beginning to feel the direct effects of climate change, and with the ocean feeling many of these effects through coral bleaching, sea-level rise and water pollution from climate amplified floods, surfers are in a unique position to lead a coastal movement for climate action in Australia and the world.

Is it too late to save the oceans? Can surfers collectively make a positive impact? Three diverse approaches to turn back the tide – from compelling climate storytelling to mobilise grassroots action, circular design and biomaterials innovation, redefining the role and responsibility of a professional surfing athlete. This panel discussion dispels some of the assumptions about surfers and their traditional advocacy for a healthy ocean (the majority still disengaged); the state of the surf industry and its broad transition towards more sustainable production of goods; highlighting some of the good news stories from industry, media, and the nonprofit sector.
