The Future of Love

About

Love and relationships – from familial love and sexual intimacy to our relationships with ourselves – sit at the very centre of what makes us human. Technology, especially AI, is already seeping into those relationships, transforming how we make friends, become intimate, and form families. How will AI change humanity – and what it means to be human – by 2050?

In this session, we will paint a vivid picture of love and relationships in the near future, one that is both familiar and barely recognisable. We will explore how today’s technologies are changing human relationships and how emerging tech will accelerate that trend. We will look to the past and explore what is constant in human connection, drawing on WWII love letters and studies of the first city-states. Our talk will feature various cameos from the fast-moving world of "Artificial Intimacy". While these technologies prompt important questions - and not a few fears - about human relationships and the nature of love, they also offer a future of diverse, vibrant relationships that enrich people's lives. To get there, there are guiding steps that we, as researchers, changemakers, and – above all – humans, must take to make that future work.
