Your Audience Is Bigger than You Think: Why You Should Be Thinking about Multilingual Content

About

Your audience is bigger than you think. Australians speak over 400 languages, with 167 of these being actively spoken Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. Nearly a quarter of Australians speak a language other than English at home. Globally more than ¾ of the world’s population do not speak English.

By limiting ourselves to English only content we turn a blind eye to a huge audience. But it’s even more important than that. Linguistic diversity is an asset for Australia, encouraging cultural exchange and social cohesion. We are a richer society if we realise and foster our multilingual power.

Media makers are just waking up to this. In podcasting, organisations such as Vice Media Group, Wondery and the BBC have all been working with bilingual or podcasts in languages other than English. Spotify is piloting a voice translation feature that translates podcasts into other languages using the original podcasters voice.

But how do you actually make content for a multilingual audience? How will new tools and AI be part of this process? SBS publishes across over 60 languages. We make articles, podcasts and videos in English that get translated into many languages and vice versa.

This session will open your eyes to the opportunity of creating multilingual content to expand your audiences. But more than this, you'll hear real experiences from producers that make this happen, sharing real life examples and practical lessons.
