In June 1987, David Shein, having recently migrated to Australia from South Africa, founded Com Tech Communications as a specialist supplier of networking and communication products and services. Fourteen years later, he sold the business at an enterprise value of over $1 billion – arguably Australia’s first unicorn. At the time of sale, Com Tech employed over 1400 people, with offices Australia wide and revenues of $700mil. The business was profitable since inception, had no external debt and was regularly voted as one of the leading companies to work for in Australia. In 2016, having been involved in investing and mentoring tech founders, David co-founded an early stage venture capital fund, OIF VC. David sits on the board of Kasada, Advanced Navigation, Optty and BARE Cremation. He is also author of a book for founders and business managers “The Dumbest Guy at the Table.”
