About

Hong Kong-born, Australia-based Councillor HY William Chan is an award-winning architect, sustainability leader and international urbanist who is ‘designing for dignity’.

As Sydney’s youngest-ever elected independent, Chan inspires with the innovative know-how to leverage change towards a fairer and more resilient urban environment. Not only is he shaping the cities of the future, but he champions how we can all be part of the process.

Forbes defines Chan as our generation’s “game-changing business and industry leader”, disrupting the convergence of citymaking and policymaking into the next half-century. From urban planning, transport, heritage, environment and sustainability to culture, creativity, inclusion and accessibility, Chan is responsible for the development of Australia’s global city.

As a Fellow of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Chan also holds appointments with Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government as a Global Public Leadership Fellow and Columbia University’s Climate School at the Center for Sustainable Urban Development.

Chan’s leadership in empowering people as partners for impact has been shared on the world stage at the United Nations General Assembly.
