Recently, John’s focus has been on writing and directing. His award winning feature film, ‘Black & White & Sex’, screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Sydney and Brisbane festivals and was in competition in Taipei. His short films, including ‘Mirror Mirror’, ‘Apartment 1911’, ‘Gunna, Tex & Dolly’ and ‘Khajuraho, my Love’ have screened at festivals in Australia and throughout the world.

His many producing credits include feature films, ‘Rabbit-Proof Fence’, ‘Paperback Hero’, Berlin entrant ‘My Mother Frank’, Sydney Film Festival opening night film, ‘Doing Time for Patsy Cline’ and ‘Vacant Possession’. He was Script Producer on the first series of the ABC’s high-rating ‘SeaChange’.

He is currently producing a web series, ‘The 100 Project’ www.the100project.com, which celebrates the lives and stories of Australia’s 100 year-olds. He has a number of India-centric projects in development (‘The Fillum’, ‘One in a Billion’, ‘MBA Wallah’ and ‘Indian Summer’).

John has a long relationship with India starting with two years as a baby in Juhu in the 1950s. He majored in Indian Studies at Melbourne University. He has been guest speaker at the Frames Conference (Mumbai), discussing co-productions, and has attended Goa Film Bazaar.

His films have been presented at Indian film festivals (IFFI, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Kerala, Ladakh) and he was invited to serve on the jury of the Pune International Film Festival. ‘Mirror Mirror’ screened at the first ever queer film festival in India, Kashish – Mumbai International Queer Film Festival (2010). His latest short film, ‘Khajuraho, my Love’, won a jury prize at Vindhya International Film Festival in Madhya Pradesh (2023).

He has a character named after him in Shirish Kunder’s Bollywood film, ‘Jaan-E-Mann’, starring Salman Khan.
