About

Leah Purcell is one of Australia’s leading actors, writers and directors with award-winning roles across all mediums. She is a proud Goa-Gunggari-Wakka Wakka Murri woman from QLD. Leah’s debut feature, The Drover's Wife the Legend of Molly Johnson, premiered at SXSW in 2021 and received seven AACTA Award nominations. She directed, wrote, co-produced and starred in the film playing the leading role, Molly Johnson. Leah was a director on anthology feature drama Here Out West, wrote on the Logie nominated ABC3 TV series, Ready for This, winning the AWGIE for Best Children’s Television Script, she wrote and directed Foxtel documentary Who We Are: Brave New Clan and wrote and directed on the AACTA award winning Redfern Now. Leah directed and starred in the short film, She Say., which had its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival. She was nominated for the IF Directors Award for her short film, Aunty Maggie and the Womba Wokgun. Included in Leah’s creations is Black Chicks Talking, featuring a 2001 documentary film, a 2002 book, a stage production and an art exhibition. For her body of screen work, Leah was awarded the 2017 Sydney-UNESCO City of Film Award for innovation, imagination and impact.
