About

Dr Mark Liu is a fashion and textile designer best known for his pioneering zero-waste sustainable fashion label at London Fashion Week in 2007. The collections drew from his Masters research at Central Saint Martin’s college and experience working at Alexander McQueen. His works have been exhibited in museums around the world. Returning to research, his PhD research explains why clothing does not fit and invented the field of “non-Euclidean fashion patternmaking”. This enables scientists and engineers advance the field of 3D patternmaking algorithms and 3D printing, which can be applied to space suits and medical garments. A former Chancellors Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney, he collaborated across disciplines to explore equitable gender law in the fast fashion industry, synthetic biology, and algae-based carbon sequestering materials. His 2023 book Sustainable Fashion Greenwash exposes the misleading advertising of “sustainable fashion”. He currently develops algae based materials at The Climate Change Cluster at the University of Technology Sydney and runs Fashion is Science and educational platform about sustainable fashion.
