What we are looking for

The SXSW Sydney Screen Festival welcomes submissions from filmmakers around the globe, featuring Feature Films, Shorts, Episodic and Webseries, along with Music Videos from the APAC region.

We embrace the genre defying and genre defining, focusing stories that push boundaries.  We love bold storytelling, the challenging and thought provoking, the exciting and innovative, the unconventional and the weird. Our passion lies in uncovering the future of filmmaking and sharing it with the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept rough cuts or work-in-progress?
Yes!  Rough cuts or works-in-progress are accepted, but we recommend submitting your work as complete as possible, even if it means waiting until the final submission day.The SXSW Sydney Programming Team reviews only one version, so if submitting a WIP, please note what’s incomplete and when it will be finished.
Does my project need to have been completed within a specific timeframe to be eligible for submission?
Projects must have been completed after January 1, 2024.
Am I allowed to resubmit a film I submitted last year?
If your film was completed after January 1,2024, and/or you believe it aligns with our programming vision, you are welcome to resubmit.
What premiere status do you require?
We require a State/NSW premiere.

This means the film should not have been publicly screened in Sydney or NSW before the 2025 SXSW Sydney Screen Festival.

We are passionate about supporting emerging filmmakers and creators in the screen industry by equipping them with the tools, connections, and guidance they need to launch their careers and share the future of filmmaking.

Screen mentor sessions offer focused, one-on-one meetings between experiences professionals and attendees, providing personalised advice, support for navigating challenges, skill refinement, and opportunities to accelerate professional growth.

We’re on the lookout for experienced screen industry professionals, from various specialties and career stages, who are eager to contribute their expertise and help shape the next generation of creators.

    types of mentorships

    One-on-One Meetings

    Our one-on-one sessions provide 15-minute private meetings between creators and mentors, offering a focused setting for attendees to ask specific, tailored questions. Mentors participate in a two-hour block, engaging in a series of hand-selected meetings with attendees to provide pointed guidance and career advice.

    Small Classroom Sessions

    In our small classroom mentor sessions, mentors spend one hour with 20 carefully chosen applicants in an intimate, closed-door setting.  Phones are set aside to ensure a distraction-free, private experience.

    Mentors have the flexibility to share their session – whether it’s delivering a presentation, giving a speech, or hosting an engaging Q&A.
