SXSW SYDNEY GAMES FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES SPECIALTY SHOWCASES AND 60 NEW GAMES

August 22, 2024

Here at SXSW Sydney, we celebrate the professionals who make games and the communities that play them. With a focus on amazing, creative work from local and Asia-Pacific games developers, here’s your chance to experience the largest indie games showcase in the southern hemisphere.

With less than two months until SXSW Sydney sees the city come alive with excitement, things are starting to heat up! We’re thrilled to reveal 60 new games to round out the Games Festival Showcase lineup, as well as a slew of specialty showcases and insightful conference sessions.

Check out these highlights:

  • • Screenbound - Crescent Moon Games - US | Enter the unique world of Screenbound, where your Quantum boy (Qboy) transports you into a weird dual dimensional space that occupies 5D = 3d + 2d. With mind bending environmental puzzles that will force you to test the limits of dimensional space, Screenbound is a platformer unlike any other. Find on X.
  • • Pie in the Sky - Monster Shop Games - AUS (WA) | Pie in the Sky is an old-school arcade, action game/simulation where you play as an Australian magpie, stealing food, swooping people and completing objectives to cause as much chaos as possible. Dripping with early 2000’s aesthetics and charm coupled with more Australian content than you can shake a sauce bottle at, Pie in the Sky is a pick up and play, mischievous and chaotic, avian adventure! Find on X.
  • • Building Relationships - TanAnt Games - UK | Roll, jump, and wave-dash around as a house on a date in this silly adventure game. Meet eccentric structures, romance eligible bachelorx pads, and uncover the meaning of life... or you could go fishing instead (though we replaced the fish with cars to make more sense). Find on X.
  • • RUBATO - dconn - UK | RUBATO is an experimental, 2D physics-based take on the collect-a-thon genre. Use your tongue to lick enemies and objects to make your way through metroidvania-like areas, whilst collecting ”Planet Bits” to help fix the solar system! Journey through 5 uniquely themed areas ranging from a huge sprawling bakery to the world’s most poorly planned city. Find on X.
  • • GRUNN - Sokpop Collective - Netherlands | Grunn is a very normal gardening game. You’ve been hired to work on a garden deep in the Dutch countryside. Except… Most of your tools are missing. The owner isn’t around. Going out after dark is forbidden. And no matter where you go, you can’t escape the sense you’re being watched. You have until Monday. Good luck! Find on X.
  • • Identifile - Gearbyte Games - Singapore | Identifile is a bullet hell roguelike but you are the cursor in your file explorer - Fend off viruses that infected your computer by circling them! Acquire modifiers and EXE files that change the game up, keeping each run unique. Unleash the chaos. Or survive it. Find on X.
  • • Gurei - Lobo Sagaz Studio - Brazil | The player is thrown into a mysterious, monochromatic setting based on Japanese culture. The antagonists are ready to be challenged from the start, so the player must choose their path to defeat all of them consecutively and with limited retries. Luckily, all the hardships are accompanied by hand-drawn animations and scenery, peculiar dialogue from the world’s inhabitants, and the satisfaction that comes from learning precise 2D combat mechanics and succeeding on your own terms. Find on X.
  • • Winter Burrow - Pine Creek Games - Denmark | Winter Burrow is a cozy woodland survival game where you explore, gather resources, craft tools, knit warm sweaters, bake pies and meet the locals. Play as a mouse who has returned from life in the city only to find that your childhood home is in ruin. Find new friends, expand your survival handbook and solve the mystery of what happened to your Aunt who has gone missing. Find on X.
  • • Dungeon Clawler - Stray Fawn Studio - Switzerland | Dungeon Clawler is a Roguelike Claw Machine Deckbuilder. Build your unique deck, fight enemies by grabbing weapons and items from a claw machine and find special artifacts that help you on your quest to reclaim something you lost... Aim carefully to claw your way through this dungeon! Find on X.
  • • The Many Pieces of Mr Coo - Nacho Rodríguez - Spain | The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo is a short point-and-click adventure game that throws its main character into a frenetic battle between two antagonistic forces, two characters representing the endless struggle between chaos and control. You will travel through a surreal cartoon world where each new situation that awaits you is unpredictable. Find on X.
