SXSW SYDNEY TEASES MORE SPEAKERS AND SESSIONS FOR ITS 2024 SCREEN FESTIVAL

July 30, 2024

We’re thrilled to pull back the curtain on the latest round of acclaimed local and international filmmaking talent added to our 2024 Screen program.

Highlights include:

➡ Camera d’Or winner and one of Australia’s most celebrated directors, Warwick Thornton (The New Boy, Samson and Delilah, Sweet Country) presenting a live director's commentary session, breaking down one of his critically lauded features.

➡ Award-winning composer and musician Jed Kurzel (Monkey Man, The Babadook, Alien: Covenant) in a live composer's commentary, discussing his approach to scoring various film opening sequences.

LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara joining us for a Q+A session on the company’s recent hit film and SXSW Sydney 2023 headliner, Saltburn.

Mark Andrews, director of Brave and contributor to other Pixar productions, sharing insights into his upcoming projects at independent animation studio Floating Rock.

These sessions are part of a broader industry program, which also includes 'From Animators to Entrepreneurs', in which two of the Co-founders of New Zealand CG company Floating Rock take you through their journey forming their independent studio; 'Making the Unreal Real: Women in VFX and Animation', a roundtable discussion presented by Ausfilm on the work of Nerissa Kavanagh (Studio Blackbird), Barbara Stephen (Flying Bark Productions), Alexandra Daunt Watney (MPC Adelaide) and Lara Hopkins (Framestore); our inaugural '90 Minute Film School', a crash-course in five unique areas of the film industry; 'Distribution on the Fringes', case studies from three successful local distributors with unique niches within the market; and 'Beyond Australia: Screening at SXSW', a roundtable discussion with local filmmakers who've taken their projects abroad to SXSW Austin.

The inaugural screen mentorship program features both one-on-one mentorship events, as well as larger, lecture-style mentorship sessions, giving emerging and mid-career filmmakers access to some of the world’s best practitioners for 1:1 career advice. The Screen Industry program also sees the return of last year's popular Screen Breakfasts and filmmaker meetups.

The above will run alongside further industry sessions yet-to-be announced, joining previously revealed conference sessions including a featured discussion with Simon McQuoid (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2).
